Paper Wasp

Paper wasps are regularly found in Tampa. While paper wasps sting people from time to time, they’re less aggressive than others. Therefore, you can rest assured knowing you can avoid getting stung. Stay away from the paper wasp nest on your property and you should be okay. Paper wasps build smaller nests. In terms of appearance, they’re small, round, and grey. You’ll notice that the nest has a unique honeycomb pattern that makes it easy to identify. These nests can be found around your property, under eaves, and on fences.

In Tampa, there are numerous paper wasps to worry about. One of the most common is the European Paper Wasp. It stands out from the crowd because it has black and yellow stripes. Its antennas are orange. Although it looks like a yellowjacket, it is slightly larger. The other paper wasp in our area is the Northern Paper Wasp. On its abdomen, it has white or yellow stripes.

Yellow jackets

You don’t want to encounter yellowjackets because they’re violently aggressive. They can sting people multiple times and could be deadly. It is essential to stay away from yellowjackets because they’re dangerous. When you see their nest, move in the opposite direction. These stinging insects build massive nests that can accommodate a few hundred or thousand pests. Their nests are normally enclosed in a material that is like paper. While their nests could be built around your attic or porch, some build underground nests. Unfortunately, their underground nests are difficult to avoid.

The yellowjacket in our area has black antennas. The rest of its body is covered in yellow and black stripes.

Bald-Faced Hornets

Besides yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets are one of the most aggressive stinging insects in our area. Their nest reaches its peak size in late summer and early fall. As this happens, the pest becomes more aggressive. Be sure to stay away from them around this time. Their nests are large and capable of supporting hundreds and thousands of pests. They look like a teardrop that has been flipped around. Therefore, you can easily spot a bald-faced hornet nest. When you do, stay away from it.

These pests have a large head, body, and thorax. Their bodies are smooth with shades of white and black.

Honeybees

Although they can still create numerous problems, honeybees are less aggressive than others. Some people have decided to raise honeybees. When they do, they can make these stinging insects gentle. They can be trained not to sting. Another thing to note is that honeybees collect and store honey. As a result, their owners can collect their honey and enjoy it too. Honeybees use the same nest for multiple years so they’re not going to leave your property right away. They’re unique because they have brown, fuzzy bodies. Other than that, they’re either yellow or orange.

Carpenter Bees

Residents of Tampa may encounter carpenter bees. These pests are less aggressive than others, but they can still sting. Carpenter bees are unique because they bore small holes in wood. If you have wood siding or a wood deck, the carpenter bees around your property will build nests in them. The hole will be 3/8 of an inch in diameter. Once the hole is drilled, it will be used to raise new carpenter bees. Carpenter bees are large stinging insects that look like bumblebees. If it has a small yellow spot around its face, you know you’re dealing with a male carpenter bee.
